City of Malaga gains 13 new electric buses from IVECO

IVECO Bus has reportedly delivered the first 13 of 19 new electric E-WAY buses to the Malaga Transport Company (EMT). The new buses will join 80 other vehicles currently in use across the city's public transport network.

The new E-WAY buses are 9.5-meters long and 2.33-meters wide, and are designed for ‘maximum maneuverability’ on the narrow streets of Malaga. Like other E-WAY buses, they feature a modular NMC battery system which has been adapted to the passenger capacity and charging needs of the bus service. In terms of passengers, the Malaga buses will carry up to 55 passengers with 16 of those being seated, as well as accessible spaces for those with reduced mobility. The vehicles are also fitted with an integrated low floor and both automatic and manual ramps, plus an interior surveillance system and a camera-based rearview system.

IVECO Bus will also play a continued support role with the vehicles through preventative maintenance programs, training support, remote diagnostics and monitoring through the IVECO ON connected service.

The buses were handed over to the Malaga Transport Company (EMT) in a ceremony this week. The overall investment of approx. €12 million euros has been partially funded by Next Generation EU funds, which have covered up to 37-per cent of the costs. It means there are now more than 80 electric vehicles in EMT’s fleet with a further six on the way. There is no word yet on which routes the buses will serve specifically.

Fabrizio Toscano, Sales Manager of IVECO BUS Iberica, commented: “We are proud to deliver these thirteen new E-Way buses to EMT Malaga, thus strengthening our partnership towards the complete electrification of urban transport. These vehicles demonstrate our commitment to ecological and high-performance solutions, aimed at improving the wellbeing of citizens while respecting the environment.”

The first fully electric buses to hit the streets of Malaga entered operation in 2023. Ten buses were delivered by MAN following a €7.5 million euro order in October 2022. They were incorporated into existing routes across all existing city districts, which could give an indication of how the new IVECO vehicles will be distributed.
