Bremen public transport operator converts depot for electric bus operation

Bremer Straßenbahn AG (BSAG) is putting 50 new electric articulated buses from Daimler Buses and Irizar into operation at the end of June. To this end, BSAG has equipped and converted its first complete depot in the Blumenthal district for e-bus operation.

The depot has been modernised since spring 2024, from the charging infrastructure to the workshop. From the end of June, 50 articulated electric buses will be in operation on the 90 lines in Bremen-North.

BSAG initially announced the purchase of a fleet of 50 new electric buses two years ago, and now all of them have finally arrived in the Hanseatic city. Specifically, these are 35 all-electric Mercedes-Benz eCitaro G articulated buses and 15 all-electric iebus18 articulated buses from the Spanish manufacturer Irizar. The buses have been delivered gradually since the beginning of the year, with an Irizar bus kicking off the programme in January. The 50 new electric buses supplement BSAG’s electric fleet, which currently consists of 20 standard eCitaro buses in the 12-metre version.

“The first major milestone has been reached in the long-term conversion of local public transport in Bremen to electromobility. In doing so, we are not only fulfilling the environmental protection goals of the federal and state governments,” emphasised Mobility Senator Özlem Ünsal. She added: “We are also increasing the quality of life in our city with modern, low-emission public transport – with cleaner air and less traffic noise.”

With the commissioning of the new electric articulated buses, there will be a total of 70 electric buses in the BSAG fleet, which is already almost a third of the entire fleet. The aim is for the entire fleet to be fully electric by 2035.
