Bosch presents improved drive units for e-bikes

Bosch eBike Systems is presenting three revised drive units for e-bikes at this week's Eurobike trade fair in Germany. The new versions of the Cargo Line, Performance Line Speed and Performance Line are quieter, lighter and more powerful. The German company has also upgraded its PowerTube 540 bike battery.

Bosch has given its electric bicycle motors, Cargo Line and Performance Line Speed, higher performance values with extra torque, power and support factor. Customers riding electric bikes with these Bosch motors will be able to adjust these values according to their needs in the eBike Flow app.

As the name suggests, the revised Cargo Line is designed to power electric cargo bikes. The drive unit now delivers even more power with up to 100 Newton meters of torque (instead of up to 85 previously) and 750 watts of maximum power (instead of 600 previously). The Cargo Line has also become lighter and quieter, now weighing 2.8 kilograms – around 100 grams lighter than its predecessor. The Cargo mode provides up to 400 per cent assistance when it is needed. The pushing aid and hill start aid, both including Hill Hold, also make handling easier.

The new Performance Line Speed now boasts maximum support of up to 400 per cent up to 45 km/h, 100 Newton metres of torque and 750 watts of maximum power. Bosch says the drive unit for S-pedelecs is “the ideal system for commuters who want to ride at higher speeds and get there faster.” The Performance Line Speed is also approximately 100 grams lighter than its predecessor and offers features such as the Limit Mode, which limits the power of the electric bike to a maximum speed of 25 km/h on request.

In Germany and elsewhere, speeds on bicycle paths are limited to 25 km/h. Electric bikes capable of higher speeds must use roadways much like mopeds and require vehicle registration. Bicycle and light electric vehicle manufacturers using Bosch motors generally choose the limited versions for models aimed at city riding and bicycle path usage.

Bosch has also announced upgrades to its bicycle batteries. Bosch has presented the new PowerTube 540 at the trade fair, which is available immediately. 540 watt hours of energy are now available from the PowerTube 540 compared to the PowerTube 500 with the same weight, but providing more range. The integrated battery meets high safety standards and can be combined with the PowerMore 250 range extender if required, providing almost 800 watt hours.

The electric bicycle and micromobility market has seen steady growth since these city vehicle types were brought to mass markets over a decade ago. Bosch supplies electric bicycle manufacturers in Europe, North America and Australia, including Gazelle, Canondale and Riese&Mueller, for example. According to the company, Bosch eBike systems are currently used in 1,702 electric bicycle models.

While Bosch supplies motors and other components for electric vehicles and maritime applications of all sizes, the German company withdrew from the battery market for electric cars and currently only manufactures batteries for electric bikes. Bosch has also invested in battery recycling companies.
